SIM WARS
SIM WARS Sri Lanka 2023
A Test of Titans; Call for Warriors
“Welcome to Srilanka’s first ever SimWars”
That would probably explain your confusion on what actually is SimWars, because you’ve probably never heard of it in Sri Lanka till now.
Recall a shift in the A&E or the Resuscitation room. You hear the bell going off, rush in with your team, “play the game” as its called, and resuscitate the patient. You step out of the room with different emotions happy or upset.
Have you ever wondered if another team, wether from different shift or different hospital, would have done a better job than yours?
Wouldn’t it be entertaining to see those two teams clashing to show who will do a better job for their patient?
Wouldn’t it let you appreciate and reflect on the Decision making skills and practice difference between teams and institutions ?
That is what SimWars is about.
SimWars is a Simulation based competition between teams of clinical providers that compete in various aspects in front of a large audience. It was initially developed by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) for the emergency medicine residents, as an entertaining learning tool emphasizing experiential learning, which involves the learner in the moment, mentally, physically, and emotionally in the moment, whether a simulated experience, reliving the past, or through collaboration (community of practice)1. It has inspired many such competitions around the world.
This time in Sri Lanka, be prepared to witness teams from different hospitals across the island, tackle on complicated trauma scenarios , showing off their clinical prowess and team spirit while under stress. Two teams will manage a single scenario one after the other , and the judges will select the best performing team out of them. Instructions for the teams
- Each team will be compromised of a team leader, airway doctor, two assessment doctors and two nurses. Think of it as the team you have during your Resus room / ETU shifts . - Senior Registrars or Consultants cannot take part in the team but can be mentors and trainers.
- You need to have a name for your team. You are welcome to make your teams own T-shirts or Scrubs.
- We will strive to make the scenario as realistic as possible. However if there are any difficulties in creating the necessary realism, we will brief you on it beforehand. You are to approach the patient as in real life.
- Patients will be actors for most of the time, and if you need to do any necessary INVASIVE procedures, models will be given to you to perform them once you state the intent to the team.
- Most of the necessary equipments needed for the scenario will be provided for you (ie Resus trolley , USS machine). You will be given time during the beginning to familiarize yourselves with the setup.
