Workshop on Post Crash Investigations
Road traffic crashes have been a leading public health concern in Sri Lanka for several years, with nearly 2,500 deaths reported annually. The Ministry of Health incurs significant costs responding to this high burden. However, evidence shows that most crashes are preventable and outcomes can be improved through early response based on identifying root causes.
The Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-2030) emphasizes implementing preventive strategies based on its five pillars. A post-crash investigation system is crucial to identify contributing factors. Recognizing the urgent need for a post-crash investigation system, the Ministry of Health and the National Trauma Secretariat plan a pilot program. Following its recommendations, nationwide implementation is envisioned.
As an initial step, a National Workshop for relevant Ministry of Health officials and other stakeholders is planned from 28 to 31 October 2024 with the kind assistance from WHO country office Sri Lanka, WHO SEARO, WHO -HQ and a participation of experts from Thailand.
